“None of this was part of my original ‘plan.’ Years back, I was working at JP Morgan, running one of their international project groups for their hedge fund division and I had this moment where I realized this is not what I’m meant to be doing. This isn’t fulfilling. So I went back to school, got my Masters in Special Education from John Jay and have been teaching at a special needs school in the South Bronx for the last 5 years. And let me tell you, making it through my first year at the school was probably the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. The biggest things we work on are the kids’ behaviors and how we can get them streamlined into a gen-ed setting. A lot of times these behaviors we’re trying to fix are not their fault, these kids are a product of what they’ve grown up in and know nothing else. Their daily worries are so much bigger than mine-where is their next meal is coming from or where are they going to be sleeping that night. How do you get through to such a young person who has this massive level of stress? But through all this, I’ve been able to get 6 of my students into a gen-ed setting! It’s huge! They’ll now have the option of going to college! It gives them this level of opportunity that they have never been given in their entire lives. They can break the cycle and be able to start fresh.”
