#OnThisDay in 1926, #MarcBohan was born in Paris. As the third head designer of @Dior (1960–89), his work stayed faithful to the classic shapes and styles of his predecessors, #ChristianDior and Yves Saint Laurent, but was noticeably more colorful. This raw silk #caftan , embellished with beads made of wood, metal, and plastic, and silk underdress date from spring/summer 1970. Genevieve Urbain, VP and fashion director at Marshall Field & Company, purchased it at Field’s 28 Shop.
Dear Mr. Main Rousseau Bocher, what a delight it was learning and sharing your incredible life and talent in the @chicagomuseum exhibition #makingmainbocher The exhibition hosted over 100,000 visitors with programs ranging from your work with the Navy #WAVES , your love of music and work with Broadway's biggest stars, to a teen fashion competition where your work inspired sixty one Chicagoland youth to create their own designs. Thank you to all of you who made the journey to the #chicagohistorymuseum to see the exhibition before it closed. And thank you to all of our supporters and colleagues in the field who helped us bring it all together. It was a sincere pleasure sharing this great story with you. Last but never least- thank you to CHM's hard-working, unbelievable talented, stellar team who each contributed in their own way to bringing this story to life. #Mainbocher#fashionhistory#chicagohistory#chmcostumecouncil#mainrousseaubocher#fashionnext2017#fashionnext#chicagofashionhistory
Own a lunch box or Tupperware? In the 1850s, you might have had a meal bin. Go behind the scenes with senior collection manager @BKArendt and intern @CatrienStardust as they explain the origins and use of this artifact: youtube.com/ChicagoHistoryMuseum
How did the #MakingMainbocher garments go from storage to custom-fitted mannequins? Mount maker Michael Hall explains the process at chicagohistory.org/blog. “Making #Mainbocher : The First American Couturier” closes on Sunday, 8/20, so this weekend’s your last chance to see it!
CHM staff just installed a 1967 paper dress in “The Secret Lives of Objects.” Paper dresses were all the rage in the late ’60s, and the @ChicagoSunTimes took advantage of that trend to promote its new format. See this dress before the exhibition closes on 11/26! #SecretObjects
Happy 50th birthday to the #Picasso sculpture! The artist's gift to the city was unveiled #onthisday in 1967 to a crowd of nearly 50,000 in Civic Center Plaza. Curator @pslinks tells the story of how this Chicago icon came to be thanks to an Englishman, an Indiana steel mill, and a Spanish artist in the south of France at chicagohistory.org/picasso50. Join us, along with @transportationlibrary and @newberrylibrary, on Tuesdays all month to share your favorite public art and to comment on the role of art in public spaces. #MonthOfPublicArt#picassois50#chipublicart
Thank you to everyone who came out and supported us this past weekend at the #chicagohotdogfest ! We had a blast celebrating Chicago's most iconic food in beautiful Lincoln Park, complete with the city's best hot dog vendors, phenomenal music, and great speakers. We are excited to see everyone again next year! #hotdogfest#chicagohistorymuseum
The sun has set on our last wedding-free weekend for quite some time. Starting this week our production team will be in full force producing countless beautiful events through the end of the year... Get ready Chicago, this wedding season is going to be one for the books! Photo: @annkamphoto Planning: @fivegrainevents
After what happened in #charlottesville yesterday, #hotdogfest was just what the soul ordered. People getting together, eating, listening to music, watching kids playing with each other unaware of any differences. A great day of peace (and hotdogs) gives hope. #chicagohistorymuseum
