BIG news to share: my screenplay MR ROB won the SF FILM / Rainin Filmmaking Grant!
MR ROB is based on the true story of Rob Lawrie, who tried to rescue young Bahar from the notorious “Jungle” Refugee Camp in Calais, but was arrested for human smuggling. The judge called it a “crime of compassion.” I’ll be working with @sffilm and @kr_foundation to finalize the screenplay. The current draft received positive feedback, it scored in the top five percent of The Black List. But I see an opportunity to bring in more of the refugee perspective, drawing on new research and my personal journey. This was my idea for SF FILM / Rainin, and I’m proud to have them as allies.
It was almost two years ago I reached out to Rob. “I make movies about people trying to do a bit of right in a world of wrong. I read about you in the news. Can we talk?” I was amazed by his openheartedness. A week later we were in Calais together, visiting the Jungle. He showed me the industriousness of people who had nothing left, except the will to help themselves and each other. He introduced me to little Bahar and her father Reza. And he entrusted me with the right to bring his story to the big screen.
It’s a big responsibility. I feel proud to have taken it this far. There’s a long journey ahead, and I look forward to sharing it with you. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves, and get to work. But today is cause for celebration! Congrats to my fellow grant recipients. I look forward to learning about your projects.
