You know that a good night’s sleep is important, but how much do you really need? ⏰
It's helpful to think of sleep in 90 minute cycles - 90 minutes is (on average) how long it takes for someone to go through the stages of sleep that constitute a cycle. We don't spend all night in deep sleep, we cycle in and out in these 90 minute periods. Most of us would benefit from a baseline of 5 of these cycles a night (5 x 90 mins = 7.5 hours). That’s 7.5 hours of uninterrupted quality sleep, not 7.5 hours in bed.
But, how do you know if you're getting enough? Using an app on your phone, tablet or fitness watch, such as Sleep Cycle, will help you to measure how much you're getting each night. .
The rise in sleep tracking stems from the phenomenon known as the ‘quantified self’ – a term used to describe those who use technology to collect data about themselves for personal development and to increase self-knowledge. .
Unfortunately, without some measurable form of success, most people will struggle to stick to their goals - you’ve got to know you’re improving and measuring your sleep is a useful way to help you measure, track and improve.
