There are hundreds of variations of the squat, and countless different ways to perform them.
It’s important to learn the fundamentals of the squat, and build from a stable foundation. These are the staples to building a healthy squat that I use with my clients.
TRX Assisted Squats: here is a great way to grease the groove of a squat. The TRX can offer assistance if you get stuck in the bottom. I also teach a doorknob squat which is the same movement but using the doorknobs in your home.
The Goblet Squat: 95% of society could get away with only using this movement. The provides strength, mobility, and removes the need for heavy weights.
The front squat: this is my favorite barbell movement. Having the bar in front removes the ability to cheat. Form is key with these. Shoulder mobility can be a factor, so if you are unable to keep the elbows high, switch to the cross arm position.

Today was a hard day. Not because Duke wasn’t well but because the fact that he has leukemia hit me like a ton of bricks as we got the clinic. He didn’t want to be there and neither did I. Today I became painfully aware of just how much longer we have to deal with this. There was a boy, probably 12 who was getting to ring the bell for his last day of chemo. I walked Duke over to the hallway so he could see what was going on and began to explain it to him. “That’s what I get to do as soon as the bad guys are gone?” he asked me. I told him yes and we began to clap for the boy. As soon as we sat back down he sadly said, “I won’t be ringing that bell for a long time, not until I’m 8. I don’t want to wait that long.” That just crushed me. As we waited for his infusion, the boy and his parents walked out and I told them congrats. His mom turned to me and said a heartfelt thank you, and told us that our time would be coming soon. 😭 This is such a hard journey, so for now I’ll chalk up today as an awakening to something I have been pushing deeper down and away. Love-hate relationship with core focused interval circuits is real... especially when they come post heavy squats and deadlifts. Think I almost died last night 😂👍 All worth it to properly be in control of my superbike this year!
