Spottswoode has become one of my favorite Napa Cab, even I only had 2 vintages. I didn't decant the 1997, just let it breathe in the glass. It jumped right out of the gates. The nose has blackberries, cherries, oak, tobacco and a lot of spices. This is a full bodied powerhouse with some powerful tannins still around.
At the moment it's still a fruit and spice driven wine that has just enough acidity to complement.
For me it lacks the balance of vintages like 92 & 94.
Still it's unbelievable that it's already 20 years of age, as it seems to be in its infancy.
Will see if this beast will come around in another decade.
