Just home from a physiotherapy appointment.  I see someone with a specialty in pelvic health - those muscles that form the pelvic floor and support my organs.  My physiotherapist is fully versed on my bone mets and has been hugely instrumental in helping me maintain and build my health and core strength.  She helps me move well to stay well. 
Before my trip to South Africa in June, we worked together to build my core muscles, and in spite of multiple long flights and more than 18 hours bouncing around in a safari Jeep, I had no back issues. 
Other than a singular conversation with a social worker after my mastectomy, she is the ONLY health care professional that has created a place for open dialogue about sexual function by broaching the topic and asking the questions.  I'm so glad she asked.  I didn't know that pelvic radiation could do a number on the whole pelvic area.... You know the adds for incontinence pads - "laugh a little, leak a little"? It doesn't have to be so.  Specialized pelvic health  physio can help with that, and painful intercourse too. 
I feel so fortunate that my physiotherapist is a part of my healthcare team.  I appreciate her expertise, teaching and encouragement.  It really makes a difference.

So in yesterday's lecture I discussed ways to optimize your microbiome and how this can enhance your health and boost your immunity.

Your gut microbiome is an ecological community of microorganisms πŸ›πŸœπŸ•·. Similar to a rainforest, this ecosystem is extremely diverse and in order for your body to function efficiently, you need to take steps to optimizing your gut health.

There is anywhere from 10-100 TRILLION microbes living in our gut, and because of this so much metabolic activity occurs in this environment.  These microbes play a huge role in our immune system and also our digestive system.

Prebiotics are essentially "food" for your microorganisms, its non digestible substances that stimulate the growth/ metabolic activity of microbes. 
Consuming foods that contain a lot of prebiotics is a great way to improve your internal environment and gut health. (I.e. 🍌 , 🍍🌢🌿 πŸ“ )

You can also optimize your gut health by consuming foods with naturally occurring probiotics. (I.e. Kimchi (fermented vegetables), yogurt 🍦, and kombucha (fermented tea β˜•οΈ))

Optimizing your gut health can decrease inflammation within your body and reduce the growth of disease causing bacteria. It will also improve your ability to absorb nutrient and minerals from your food. This will minimize risk of nutrient deficiencies. Also, it improves your body's ability to eliminate toxins.

Through experiencing difficulty focusing or multitasking, decreased memory, intermittent neck discomfort, sharp pains in my rib cage, and poking sensations in my arm where the PICC line was, I am reminded every day of how BLESSED I am to be alive! 
This is a part of my story I don't share very often. Who wants to admit that their mental function and clarity has decreased? Not me! I was in college when I was diagnosed with Lemierres syndrome, a rare infection that causes sepsis, pneumonia and blood clotting. I spent a week in the hospital, 5 months on antibiotics, had my tonsils out, and took about a year to "fully recover". Before LS, I felt like I was in top of the world! I was able to return to school but had to cut out work, volunteering and a lot of other social activities so I could stay on top of my grades. Decreased ability to focus and decreased memory is a common side effect of the sepsis that is involved with LS. 
I was 90 lbs after getting sick and swore I would never complain about tummy fat again! Well, fast forward 6 years and I had forgotten the promise I made to myself. But I'm glad I did! By turning to healthy eating and exercising to lose weight, I actually started to see some of these side effects improve!! Particularly, focus and memory! Yes, I still totally have mom brain! πŸ˜‚ but that's another story! 
Anyway, my point is, we often can't fix whatever our health problems are, but healthy eating and exercise  can help to optimize our body and brain functions and overall health! (Of course when cleared by a doctor ;)) If you want to start optimizing your health, I have another health and fitness challenge group coming up in February and I'd LOVE for you to be in it.

Recent scientific studies repeatedly show that women who get regular sun exposure have a lower death rate than those who avoid sun, in spite of the fact that they have a slightly higher risk of melanoma. This may be due to their increased vitamin D levels. Clearly, sunburn leads to skin damage. However studies show that sensible sun exposure at non-peak hours can be extremely beneficial. Indeed it is necessary for your health.

According to a news report β€œ15 to 20 minutes in sunlight a day helps your body produce the vitamin D it needs to absorb calcium, promote bone growth and keep the heart healthy. But sunscreen protection against skin cancer reduces the body’s ability to manufacture vitamin D.”

Skin Damage Depends on Sun Intensity and Time of Day. The peak time of sunshine around 12:00 noon can give you a serious burn. On the other hand in the morning or evening, the sun’s rays are at a much greater angle. Sunlight is filtered through thousands of miles of atmosphere in the morning and evening, so these rays are less likely to cause damage.
