For this week’s #WorkoutWednesday we will be talking about Push Ups! Push ups function as both a strengthening and stabilizing exercise. They work to strengthen the triceps and the chest which are the muscles responsible for the propulsive phase of each stroke. As a stabilizing exercise they focus on the stabilizing muscles of the shoulder joint and core, preventing shoulder injury and promoting an improved body position in the water.
Start by positioning your hands on the floor, just outside the chest, a little wider than shoulder width. Support your lower body on your toes. Hold your body in a straight line from the top of your head to your feet. Your hips should not be too high or too low. Engage your quads, glutes and abs, then push your body upward until the elbows are almost locked. Lower your body until your chest touches the floor, or until your chest is about an inch off of the floor. Avoid flaring your elbows out to the side, keeping them back behind the shoulder joint. This will help protect the shoulder joint from impingement and irritation.
When looking at the push up from the front we can easily see the positioning of the hands and the full range of motion required for the exercise.
The top view shows how throughout the push up the elbows stay in the same position. They should be positioned at about a 45 degree angle from the body.
For those not yet strong enough to safely do push ups with an effective range of motion, we modify the movement by having the athlete lower their body all the way to the floor, engaging the right muscles and pressing back up to the top of the movement. This serves to build strength in a full range of motion, encourages correct muscle memory, and forces you to engage the core throughout the movement. It also avoids stressing the shoulder joint with improper movement.
Due to our travel meet this weekend there will be no #SpotlightSaturday or #SkillSunday this week. We will resume those next week.
